Whipple disease is a chronic, systemic disease that in most cases involves the small intestine and its lymphatic tissue. The disease mainly affects middle-aged men, with an increased incidence in the third and fourth decade of life. Clinical findings may include malabsorption, chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, arthralgia, fever, and central nervous system symptoms. The disease is due to the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei (formerly called Tropheryma whippelii) of the Radiobacterium family. The microbe is stick-shaped and does not stain Gram.
