Adrenal Function Test AdrenalScan®

AdrenalScan® is a saliva test that evaluates the key stress hormones produced by the adrenal glands, Cortisol and Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S). For this test, four saliva samples are collected during one day, thus allowing both the detection of imbalances in the production of adrenal hormones and secondly, the evaluation of the circadian rhythm of adrenal function.

The Adrenal Function test can help identify the underlying causes for many chronic diseases and clinical disorders, aiming to design appropriate individualized therapeutic interventions.

What diseases are associated with adrenal dysfunction?

Dysfunction of the adrenal cortex is involved in various diseases and pathological conditions. Low cortisol levels may be related to:

Why is it beneficial to monitor Adrenal Function by measuring the hormones in saliva?

Compared to standard blood tests for adrenal hormones, salivary hormone evaluation offers several advantages:

  • Hormone levels measured in saliva are non-protein bound (free) and therefore actually bioavailable
  • Levels of bioavailable hormones in saliva correlate with those circulating in the blood
  • Collecting saliva samples is easy, performed at home, and does not cause additional stress (taking blood for many people is very stressful)
  • In addition to monitoring hormone levels, it reveals possible pathological patterns in the release of cortisol within 24 hours (circadian rhythm), which can be treated with individualized therapeutic interventions
