Clozapine (Clozapine, Leporex), a tricyclic dibenzodiazepine, is used to symptomatically manage psychotic disorders and is considered an atypical antipsychotic drug. It is mainly used to treat patients with schizophrenia or schizo-emotional disorders at risk of recurrent suicidal behavior.
Patients treated with clozapine should be closely monitored (white blood cell count and absolute neutrophil count) during treatment due to adverse drug reactions (mainly agranulocytosis). Clozapine treatment should be discontinued in patients who do not have an acceptable clinical response, and even in patients with a positive clinical response, the need for continued treatment should be periodically reassessed.
