Oxalate, Urine 24h

Urine oxalate determination is used to monitor treatment for kidney stones, assess the risk of kidney stones caused by oxalate, and diagnose primary and secondary hyperoxaluria.

More information

Oxalate is an end product of urinary metabolism. Oxalic acid can be combined with calcium to form calcium oxalate. Oxalates can accumulate in kidney and bladder tissues and cause kidney stones, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis.

Increased urinary oxalate excretion may result from inherited enzyme deficiencies (primary hyperoxaluria), gastrointestinal disorders associated with fat malabsorption (secondary hyperoxaluria), or increased intake of foods rich in oxalates or vitamin C.

Possible Interpretations of Pathological Values

  • Increase: Celiac disease, cirrhosis, Crohn's disease, ethylene glycol poisoning, diabetes mellitus, poor fat absorption (severe), hyperoxaluria (primary), nephrolithiasis, pancreatic insufficiency, sarcoidosis, Vitamin B6 deficiency. Medications: Large doses of ascorbic acid and calcium.
  • Decrease: Gastrointestinal disease or surgery that affects absorption. Hyperglycinemia, hyperglycinuria, renal failure.

Important Note

Laboratory test results are the most critical parameter for diagnosing and monitoring all pathological conditions. Between 70 to 80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. Correctly interpreting laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased."

Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be analyzed based on each case and family history, clinical findings, and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your physician should explain the importance of your test results.

At Diagnostiki Athinon, we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and contact your doctor to ensure you receive the best possible medical care.
