Valproic Acid, Serum

Valproic acid measurement is used to monitor the levels of the drug in the body during treatment.

Valproic acid (Depakine) is an anticonvulsant drug, effective against seizures (myoclonic, generalized tonic-clonic - grand mal, absence - petit mal, complex focal) as well as for long-term control of manic episodes in bipolar disorder. It has also been used experimentally in panic disorders and for the treatment of migraine while it has been found to play a role in suppressing the development of various tumors.

After oral or rectal administration, it is metabolized by the liver and excreted in the urine, with a half-life of 6-8 hours. The absorption of valproic acid is slowed by the presence of food in the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, peak levels occur later when the drug is administered with a full stomach compared to the doses given on an empty stomach.

At toxic levels, valproic acid can cause hallucinations (burning sensation in the legs), numbness, tingling, weakness, and mood swings.

Important Note

Laboratory test results are the most important parameter for the diagnosis and monitoring of all pathological conditions. 70%-80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. The correct interpretation of laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased".

Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be interpreted in relation to each individual case and family history, clinical findings, and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your personal physician should explain the importance of your test results.

At Diagnostiki Athinon we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and we contact your doctor to get the best possible medical care.
