New study highlights the benefits of the Mediterranean diet for women

An increasing body of scientific research suggests that the Mediterranean diet is probably the only diet that prevents diseases!

According to a new US scientific study, the Mediterranean diet reduces cardiovascular risk by 25%, especially in women, as prescribed medicines, such as statins. These data add to others that also show the benefits of this diet.

Researchers from the School of Medicine and School of Public Health of Harvard University and Brigham and Women's Hospital of Massachusetts analyzed data from nearly 26.000 women over a 12-year period and they published their data in the American Medical Journal “JAMA Network Open”.

Their findings indicate that people who consumed a regular Mediterranean diet had an average of 29% reduction in chronic inflammation (and therefore cardiovascular risk), almost 30% improvement in glucose metabolism (sugar) and insulin resistance, as well as a 27% reduction in body mass index.

The supervisor of the research team, Dr. Safkat Ahmad talked about a "strong public health message" and "significant implications for primary cardiovascular disease prevention". According to him, the new study shows that the Mediterranean diet works protectively in a multifactorial way and in the long term.
