Alzheimer's disease is considered a
Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is a disease that evolves progressively, destroying memory and other important mental functions of the brain. As with other forms of dementia, it is a disorder of the brain that leads to a gradual loss of mental function and social skills.
Particularly, in Alzheimer's disease, brain cells degenerate and die, causing a steady decline in the patient's memory and mental function. These days, the drugs on the market delay the progression of the disease and in combination with various therapeutic strategies (given by the therapist) can improve the symptoms but do not restore the neurological damage that has already been established.
The causes of Alzheimer's disease have not been fully understood. However, important risk factors are considered to be genetic predisposition and increased age. The risk of developing dementia increases with age. However, we should not consider that the decline of mental abilities belongs to the context of the normal process of aging. As we grow older, some of us will get dementia, while others will not.
Many of our patients, especially those with Alzheimer's history and other forms of dementia in the family, wonder if they can somehow prevent the condition. The truth is that prevention of a disease whose causes are not yet 100% proven, is difficult to be achieved.
So, in these cases, the early diagnosis of the disease is of great value as it gives them time to inform, accept the situation, maintain the quality of life, and plan for the future of all these people. As certified by the Athens Alzheimer Scientific Society, Alzheimer's disease is an epidemic with unbearable consequences for the patients, their families, and society.
At Diagnostiki Athinon, we provide various tests that give information about the predisposition to Alzheimer's disease, such as the ApoE genotype test, the oral microbiome test, which many studies causatively associate with the appearance of the disease (e.g. periodontal bacteria, more details will be announced soon), the chronic inflammation profile which is also a proven predisposing factor for the occurrence not only of Alzheimer's disease but also of many other diseases of modern lifestyle, as well as Neuroscan® - a group of laboratory tests for the examination of neurotransmitters and other parameters related to the health of the central and peripheral nervous systems.
