Egg: 5 reasons we should include it in our diet!

One of the most misunderstood foods! The good reputation of the egg in our diet seems to be restored and it is considered an excellent source of protein!

There was a time when eggs were almost demonized and the recommendations even said to completely avoid them as harmful to our health. The whole issue probably comes down to a big dietary misunderstanding, because finally, eggs are a valuable food in a balanced and healthy diet. So, if you avoid eggs even though you do not have a health problem or your doctor has not given you relevant instructions, here are 5 reasons why you should include them in your diet:

1. It is one of the cheapest available protein sources.

Nowadays, meat and fish tend to become luxury products because of their price. However, eggs, even organic ones (considered to be of superior nutritional value) are very affordable for everyone and give you 6 grams of excellent protein (half the amount contained in the yolk and not only in the egg white) and amino acids similar to those of meat.

2. It is the best choice at breakfast to keep you full!

Eggs are considered a complete food that satiates you. Especially when you eat them at breakfast you delay hunger more than a breakfast based on flour (such as pancakes or bun) and this is what many studies indicate. In a study published in the journal Nutrition Research, men who ate eggs for breakfast were more satisfied, had lower levels of hunger hormones (such as ghrelin) in their blood, and needed a smaller portion of their lunch than those who ate a bun for breakfast.

3. Protect your eyes from harmful light.

Eggs and especially the egg yolk are rich in lutein, a yellow substance that accumulates in the retina of the eye. Lutein protects the eyes from macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss. It also protects the eyes from damage caused by the so-called "blue light", the light emitted by mobile phones, tablets, and computer screens.

4. It is not the "bad" food that clogs the arteries!

For decades, eggs had been demonized for health problems for which they were not responsible, such as high cholesterol and an increased risk of heart disease. Now, science has shown that cholesterol from foods such as eggs or seafood is not as dangerous as we thought. In fact, the latest version of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans does not contain the restriction of cholesterol through food to 300 mg per day.

5. Eggs help maintain muscle mass.

Around the age of 30, our body starts to lose about 5% in muscle mass per decade of life! This loss can make us feel weak, with less stamina, and later contribute to accidental falls leading to injuries. Exercise helps maintain our muscle mass but the key is to eat enough protein. Eggs contain a highly nutritious protein that repairs muscle after exercise and helps rebuild muscles.
